On September 16th and 17th, Russian language lessons were held for the 4th-grade college class and the 3rd-5th-grade primary school classes at the Groupe Scolaire Le Muguet in Abidjan.
The students were aged 9 to 13. What amazing kids! They are active, capable, and quick on the uptake! They eagerly jot down interesting dates and facts themselves! They are always ready to answer, share stories, and contribute.
The students learned about the geographical position of the world’s largest country, its flag, national symbols, and several iconic figures such as Yuri Gagarin and Leo Tolstoy. They were genuinely amazed to discover that a train journey from west to east takes 7 days, that St. Basil’s Cathedral is almost 500 years old, and that the alphabet has 33 letters, more than 10 of which are the same as in French.
In the video clip «I, You, He, She – Together a Whole Country,» they managed to identify various sports and the stunning landscapes of Russia.

Then we moved on to Russian language exercises. The children already knew many more words than they realized! Zebra, lamp, mama, papa, giraffe, banana, pineapple, medicine, music… They also handled geography in Cyrillic surprisingly easily, eagerly reading the names of countries and continents. The name «Burkina Faso» was the easiest for them, perhaps because there are representatives of that country in the class, or because they figured out it has a hyphen in the middle.
Armed with the alphabet and phonetics, the boys and girls learned how to greet, introduce themselves, thank, and say goodbye. The hit of the program was the informal farewell «poka-poka.» At the end of the lesson, the children received small souvenirs with Yaroslavl symbols. It was a very joyful, warm, and fun experience!
Many thanks to the school administration, the principal Mr. Alexandre Diby, the teachers, and the students for their keen interest in the Russian language and culture and for their hospitality!
The implementation of the project to promote the Russian language in the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire is carried out by Yaroslavl State Pedagogical University (YSPU) with the support of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Education and the «My History» Foundation for Support of Humanitarian Sciences.
