Kizhi is a wonderful island on Lake Onega in Karelia. There is a museum there. This island is home to ancient wooden churches. They were built in the 18th-19th centuries.
The Church of the Transfiguration is very beautiful. Its height is 37 meters. It has 22 domes. According to legend, the master craftsman Nestor built it using only an axe and without nails. Next to it stands the more modest but no less beautiful Church of the Intercession with 9 domes. These domes resemble a crown. Between them stands a wooden bell tower with a pointed roof.
The entire island is a living museum of Russian antiquity. Here you can see houses where peasants once lived, mills, barns, and other structures. Inside the houses, you can look at furniture, icons, and clothing. In the summer, guides in folk costumes walk around the island. They show and tell how people lived in the old days.
If you want to visit Kizhi, you can do so by ship (from the city of Petrozavodsk), and in winter – by snowmobile, because there is a lot of snow here.
