The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace is located in the capital of Côte d’Ivoire. It was built in 1989. The country’s first president, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, wanted his hometown, where he was born, to be an important religious center, so the basilica was built in Yamoussoukro. It is the largest church in the world. It is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The height of the basilica is 158 meters. The golden cross on its dome weighs a whole 3 tons. Up to 18,000 people can be inside at the same time. Next to the basilica, there is a large square. It can hold 60,000 people. The architecture of the church combines traditional Christian elements with African motifs.
Visitors can not only explore the interior of the basilica but also go up to the top. From there, you can look out over the entire city. There is a hospital next to the basilica.
