Altai is an amazing place. Its name translates as «golden mountains.» Here are the borders of four countries: Russia, Kazakhstan, China, and Mongolia. The nature of Altai is very rich. The name «golden mountains» is not related to gold but to the bright yellow color of the trees that grow in this area.
The main attraction is Mount Belukha, the highest point in Siberia. Its height is 4,506 meters. It is very cold there, and there is always snow. Rare plants listed in the Red Book grow in these mountains, and the forests are home to 70 species of animals, more than 300 species of birds, and 20 species of fish.
Not far from the mountains, there is a lake. Lake Teletskoye is one of the largest and cleanest in Russia; it is often compared to Baikal and called its younger brother. Its depth is 325 meters.
The history of Altai is interesting: the first people appeared here about a million years ago. In 1993, archaeologists found the ancient mummy of a woman in the ice, which they named the «Altai Princess.» Now you can see it in the National Museum.
