Emperor Peter I (the Great) founded the city of Saint Petersburg in 1703 on the Neva River. Saint Petersburg is often called the «cultural capital» of Russia because it is home to 8,464 historical and cultural monuments.
The historic center of Saint Petersburg is a center of Russian and world culture, known for its beautiful architectural palaces and museums. Some of them were built 200 years ago. The map of the historic center of Saint Petersburg resembles a triangle, which is called the Golden Triangle. The city’s three main rivers: the Moika, the Neva, and the Fontanka, make the center look like this shape.
In this area, you can see Palace Square. This is the city’s central square, where parades, festivals, and concerts are held. The square is home to the Hermitage, a famous museum with a huge collection of paintings, sculptures, and other works of art. There are about 3 million of them here. Nearby is the Field of Mars, a large park where you can walk, sit on a bench, and relax. The Kazan and St. Isaac’s Cathedrals are religious symbols of the city. They are often seen on postcards and photos of Saint Petersburg.
The historic center also includes the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Winter Palace, the Alexander Column, and the «Bronze Horseman» – a monument to the first Russian Emperor Peter the Great.
