President Vladimir Putin, at the plenary session of the «Russia-Africa» Economic and Humanitarian Forum, announced that Russia will assist African countries in developing higher, general, and secondary vocational education.
During the visit, the parties discussed a plan to implement the agreement signed in March 2023. Within the next three months, ETIC University will prepare the premises for the Yaroslavl State Pedagogical University (YSPU) Center for Open Education named after K.D. Ushinsky, and will also identify the group of students who will undergo Russian language programs. The center is expected to open and begin classes in September 2023.
Specifically, Russia will help train teachers, mentors, and technical staff for schools and vocational institutions, as well as establish joint schools for which special programs are already being developed.
«The Russian Ministry of Education, in the Year of the Teacher and Mentor, has initiated the creation of a network of Centers for Open Education and Russian Language Studies in more than 50 friendly countries worldwide. This large-scale project is being implemented within the framework of the Concept of the Russian Federation’s Humanitarian Policy. Such centers will be opened in 28 African countries, namely Algeria, Angola, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Mozambique, the Republic of the Congo, Tunisia, Uganda, Ethiopia, and South Africa,» said Alexander Mikhaylovich Khodyrev.
Russian education is attractive to young people in West African countries, and learning Russian generates great interest among them, as it is the first step toward admission to Russian universities and an opportunity to explore Russian culture. Currently, over 300 young people from Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana have expressed a desire to study Russian at the Centers for Open Education.
In early September, 20 students from the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire and the Republic of Ghana will arrive at Yaroslavl State Pedagogical University to pursue bachelor’s and master’s degree programs.
In March 2023, memoranda of cooperation were signed between YSPU named after K.D. Ushinsky and universities in the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire and the Republic of Ghana.
This initiative benefits both sides, as it fosters educational, scientific, and cultural cooperation between Russia and African countries. Currently, a large number of African students are already studying at Russian universities, and with the opening of the Centers, citizens of African republics, primarily young people, will have the opportunity to learn Russian.
