PERSONAL SAFETY AND BEHAVIOR

For an international student, it is important to understand the specifics of behavior in public places in Russia to avoid unpleasant situations and establish comfortable interactions with others. Here are some recommendations:

Safety

  1. Always carry your passport and migration registration notification with you. The police have the right to check documents, especially those of foreigners.
  2. Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded places such as markets, shopping centers, and public transport.
  3. Save emergency phone numbers in your mobile phone: police — 102, ambulance — 103, fire service — 101.

Compliance with public order norms

  1. Do not make noise after 10:00 PM, especially in residential areas. Russia has strict laws against nighttime noise, and violations may result in fines.
  2. Be respectful of others. This applies to queues in stores, public transport, and other places. Russians value order and adherence to queues.

Behavior in educational institutions

  1. Follow the dress code, which varies depending on the institution. Usually, students wear casual clothing, but it is important to avoid overly revealing outfits.
  2. Participate in student life: attend events, get to know your classmates. This will help you adapt faster and make friends.

Interactions with the police

  1. If you are stopped by police officers, remain calm and polite. Show your documents upon request.
  2. In case of a conflict, try to resolve the issue peacefully and seek help from official representatives of your university or embassy.

Religious and cultural aspects

  1. Respect religious customs and traditions. For example, in Orthodox churches, women are advised to cover their heads with a scarf, while men should remove their hats.
  2. Avoid openly displaying religious symbols in public places if they do not align with local traditions.

Etiquette and communication

  1. Greetings: In Russia, it is customary for men to shake hands, while women usually greet verbally.
  2. Use the formal «you» (вы)when addressing elders and strangers. Formal speech shows respect.
  3. Avoid rude expressions and profanity in public places.

Transportation

  1. Follow the rules while using public transport. On buses, the metro, and trams, it is customary to give up seats to the elderly, pregnant women, and passengers with children.
  2. Fare payment is made by bank card. Inspectors check fare payments, and failure to pay may result in a fine.
  3. Be careful on escalators in shopping centers: stand on the right, walk on the left.
